Here is the dash kit. I've
already removed the thin strip that went horizontally across the
middle of the opening.
|
|
 |
As per instructions, I snipped the
set of mounts off that are not needed. It's probably not
necessary, but certainly doesn't hurt anything.
|
|
 |
The stock radio next to the AVIC
with the dash kit installed. All measurements seemed to match.

|
 |
Finally in the dash! I was
going to just pull the dash panel back and work around it, but that
proved to be far too much trouble. Completely removing the
dash is the only way to go.

The rear screws were hitting the
vertical mount frame when I tried to slide the unit in, so I cut a
notch in them for clearance. A flatter screw might not have
this problem, but it doesn't hurt anything to cut the frame - the
plastic part is not structural. There is a steel frame behind
it that supports the weight.

Just another view.

The view from the right side.
Note the notch on the frame on this side too. BTW, the lower
rear dash kit screw holes did not QUITE line up with the holes in
the AVIC so I just left those screws out. If they were
installed, you'd need to notch the lower part of the frame too.

The finished product! It looks
very "factory" and complements the rest of the instruments well.

|
 |
Although the outer appearance is
good, right now the scene behind the unit is a jumble of wires which
need to be taken care of. I plan to pull everything out again
and cut the unneeded wires and tidy things up before I'm done with
this.

|
 |
At this point the speed sensor,
reverse, and parking brake wires are not connected. Also, the
antenna wire just comes out the bottom of the dash. I hope to
eventually mount the antenna at the extreme forward center part of
the dash, just behind the windshield. If that doesn't work
well, I'll move it to the roof, just forward of the light above the
rear window.

Lots of fingerprints to clean up,
but the installation looks good and seems to be very solid.
